Cumulopuntia boliviana | Bolivian cushion cactus

🌱 Morphology
A true miniature plant fortress: numerous segments accumulate to form large, dense, and compact hemispherical cushions, which can reach about 1 m in diameter. The segments are fleshy, ovoid to cylindrical, green in color, and have a surface marked by areoles.
The areoles are armed with abundant spines, generally yellow or golden, which take on reddish and brownish hues with age. Some can reach several centimeters in length. The plant branches profusely from the base and can form structures with an almost cushioned appearance, adapted to the harsh conditions of the high Andean mountains.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Cactaceae, subfamily Opuntioideae, tribe Tephrocacteae. Its distribution mainly encompasses Bolivia, Peru, and northwestern Argentina, in arid and semi-arid Andean environments. It grows in open, stony, high-altitude areas subject to intense solar radiation, strong thermal oscillations, and prolonged periods of drought.
Its nomenclatural history is complex. It was originally described as Opuntia boliviana by Salm-Dyck in 1845 and was later combined by Friedrich Ritter into Cumulopuntia. Kew currently considers Cumulopuntia boliviana a synonym of Cumulopuntia pentlandii, while Joël Lodé retains Cumulopuntia boliviana in his 2024 treatment. For Desert CITY, therefore, Lodé’s name is used.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 8a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −12 ºC in dry conditions with excellent drainage. Its Andean origin and the high altitudes at which it grows explain its ability to withstand very cold nights, although, as with many high-mountain cacti, cold combined with prolonged humidity is much more problematic.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun and maximum luminosity. During active growth, a target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended. Intense radiation promotes the compact growth of the cushions and proper spine formation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During the winter, it should be kept practically dry, especially when temperatures are low. Rapid drainage is essential to prevent water from remaining around the roots during cold periods.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear on the upper segments and stand out due to their size in relation to the plant's body. They are generally yellow, with shades that can vary within the complex, and appear during the favorable growing season. In cultivation, flowering can occur from late spring to summer, depending on temperatures and the duration of the active season.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for cacti with high levels of potassium and bioavailable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
