🌱 Morphology
A relatively slow-growing, compact, and highly branched hybrid that can reach approximately 10–20 cm in height and spread with stems that are initially erect but may arch over time. The stems take on reddish tones, especially under high light levels. The leaves are opposite and decussate, fleshy, small, triangular to elliptical in shape, and dark green to grayish-green in color. The margins feature cilia and the surface shows some scattered papillae, characteristics that are especially useful for differentiating it from other similar hybrids.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. It has no natural distribution, as it is a hybrid obtained in cultivation. It was introduced by Hans Britsch in Vista, California, before 1980. Its possible parentage is Crassula perfoliata var. minor × ? Crassula rupestris, expressly indicating uncertainty about the second parent.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. It grows best with mild temperatures and good ventilation. It can tolerate drops near the lower limits of its zone if it remains completely dry, but the combination of cold, humidity, and poor ventilation must be avoided. Actual tolerance also depends on the degree of acclimatization and the plant's water status.
☀️ Lighting
Intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. Insufficient radiation promotes stem elongation and excessive leaf spacing, while high lighting keeps the habit compact and can intensify the reddish tones of the stems and margins. Adaptation to direct sun should be carried out progressively.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. As this is a hybrid of South African parents rather than a species subject to a natural rainfall regime, it is not appropriate to impose a rigid growth calendar. In cultivation, it responds well during periods of mild temperatures and good lighting, while extreme heat can temporarily slow down activity. During growth, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In very high or low temperatures, watering should be considerably spaced out, and the root system should not be allowed to remain damp.
🌸 Flowering
It produces abundant terminal inflorescences, which are compact and approximately hemispherical in shape, formed by small pink to pink-rose flowers with a reddish center. They are fragrant, and flowering usually occurs from late winter to spring, although it may vary depending on growing conditions. In Spain, it can generally be expected between February and May.
🌿 Nutrition
Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended during the active growth period. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering, especially when the goal is to promote abundant flowering without stimulating excessively soft growth.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
