🌱 Morphology
Perennial succulent plant, cespitose and highly branched from the base, forming small clumps or dense cushions, generally up to about 10 cm in height, which can reach approximately 25 cm during flowering. The stems are short and can produce new shoots from the base. The leaves are arranged in compact rosettes; they are flat, elliptical, broadly elliptical, or ovate-lanceolate, approximately 10–30 × 6–14 mm, with a flat or slightly channelled adaxial surface and a convex abaxial surface. The apex is acute and the margin is ciliate. The surface can be glabrous or have recurved hairs, a highly variable characteristic within the species. The coloration ranges from green to reddish-green when it receives plenty of light.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. Its distribution covers South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini, especially Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and mountainous inland areas. It grows mainly in grasslands and montane environments, occupying rock crevices and small pockets of soil, from approximately 200 to 3400 m in altitude.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 8b–11b. Its mountainous distribution explains a cold tolerance superior to that of many South African Crassula species. Minimum temperatures can be as low as -7 °C. It can withstand low temperatures when completely dry, but the combination of intense cold and moist substrate should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
Intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. With good lighting, the rosettes remain compact and the leaves can acquire reddish tones. It also tolerates some light protection, especially during episodes of intense heat.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Summer dormancy. Its wide distribution and the diversity of environments it occupies make it inappropriate to establish a rigid dormancy period. Vegetative activity is favored by moderate temperatures and periodic water availability, while intense heat can cause a slowdown. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. During intense cold, it should be kept practically dry. In summer, if temperatures are very high, it is advisable to cut back on irrigation until the thermal stress decreases.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescence is terminal, compact, and looks like a small head, formed by one or several groups of flowers. The flowers are sessile, tubular, white, with oblong to lanceolate petals and yellow to brown anthers. In Madrid, flowering can appear approximately between January and May, depending on cultivation conditions and temperature.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and always respecting the complete drying of the substrate. Before flowering, Desert CHOICE® Flowering can be used.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
