🌱 Morphology
A slow-growing, compact succulent hybrid that develops erect stems, which later branch out and tend to become woody at the base. The leaves are fleshy, flat, and triangular, very densely imbricated and arranged in four rows, forming compact, quadrangular columns that resemble a small pagoda. Its coloration is green, but it can acquire reddish, bronze, or purplish tones when intense lighting is combined with cool temperatures and dry substrate. With age, it can form a small clump of several stems.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Crassulaceae family. This is a horticultural hybrid of Crassula pyramidalis × Crassula congesta, so it does not have a natural distribution of its own. Both parents belong to the group of columnar Crassula from southern Africa. The hybrid retains the compact and densely foliated architecture characteristic of this group. It is also marketed under the popular name “Mini Jade Pagoda”.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. It can withstand moderate temperature drops if kept completely dry. During episodes of intense cold, it is recommended to keep it protected and reduce or suspend watering.
☀️ Lighting
Intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. High light exposure promotes compact growth and can intensify reddish and purplish tones. The change in color should not be interpreted as a need to keep it permanently in direct sun, especially during periods of extreme heat.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
As it is a hybrid, there is no natural climatic cycle of its own that allows for a rigid rest period. Its growth is favored by mild temperatures and good lighting, while intense heat can slow it down. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before watering again. At very high or very low temperatures, watering should be spaced out considerably and the roots kept dry during cold periods.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear grouped in terminal inflorescences on the stems, forming compact heads. They are white to cream-white, and may show pinkish tones in the buds. In European cultivation, flowering is described mainly between autumn and spring, although it may vary according to temperature and light conditions. The flowering of this hybrid should not be confused with the monocarpic behavior of Crassula congesta: the hybrid nature can significantly modify the reproductive response of the parent.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and always respecting the complete drying of the substrate. Before the formation of inflorescences, Desert CHOICE® Flowering can be used.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
