🌱 Morphology
Perennial succulent plant, low-growing and forming clusters via stolons that root and produce new rosettes. The rosettes can be numerous, forming dense colonies up to 30–50 cm in diameter. The leaves are spirally arranged, oblanceolate to narrowly elliptical, occasionally obovate, flat and fleshy, approximately 1.5–8 cm long. They are green to brownish-green, and may acquire pink or reddish tones on the margins and toward the apex when receiving higher light intensity. The margins feature a characteristic row of cilia, while old leaves remain attached to the stems.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Crassulaceae family. Species endemic to South Africa, distributed from the Western and Eastern Cape to KwaZulu-Natal. It grows mainly in scrublands and subtropical environments, on sheltered rocky slopes, scrub clearings, and places where it receives filtered light or shade. The name Crassula orbicularis 'Rosularis' and the old Crassula rosularis are currently considered synonyms of Crassula orbicularis. ‘Rosularis’ remains a horticultural denomination for certain cultivated plants.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. It can withstand moderate temperature drops if kept dry and protected from persistent moisture. During episodes of intense cold, it is recommended to significantly reduce watering.
☀️ Lighting
It is one of the Crassula species that best tolerates filtered light. Sufficient intensity is recommended to maintain compact growth, with a target of 10–18 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. It can be grown with more light if acclimated, developing pink or reddish hues, but intense sun accompanied by high temperatures can cause leaf stress.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Its origin in subtropical and sheltered environments gives it a more flexible cycle than Crassula species from arid regions with rainy winters. It remains active for much of the year when temperatures are moderate and sufficient moisture is available, slowing down during intense cold or extreme heat. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. During periods of extreme temperatures, watering should be spaced out, avoiding both prolonged root dryness and permanent moisture.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescence appears at the end of the stems and forms a long branched thyrse, usually supported by a peduncle of approximately 5–20 cm. The flowers are tubular, white to pale yellow, often with pink or reddish tones. In Madrid, flowering can occur mainly between December and May, depending on temperatures and the cultivation regime.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and respecting the complete drying of the substrate. Before flowering, Desert CHOICE® Flowering can be used to promote the formation of inflorescences.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
