š± Morphology
A compact and highly branched cultivar of Crassula ovata, with a shrubby habit and stems that develop a woody structure with age. The leaves are arranged opposite and decussate, they are fleshy, glabrous, obovate to elliptical in shape, relatively wide, and with a characteristically very obtuse, almost rounded apex. They range in color from grayish-green to dark green, generally with a reddish margin that intensifies with high light exposure and some water restriction. Compared to other selections of C. ovata, āMinova Magicā stands out for its wider, more rounded, and compactly arranged leaves, forming a dense canopy.
š Distribution, habitat and family
Family Crassulaceae. It is a horticultural cultivar of Crassula ovata, so āMinova Magicā does not have its own natural distribution. The species is native to South Africa and Eswatini, where it grows in dry environments, especially on rocky slopes and ravines. āMinova Magicā belongs to a line of commercial cultivars developed and maintained in cultivation; it is currently registered as a variety of Crassula ovata.
āļø Temperature ā USDA Zone 9bā11b
It tolerates cool temperatures when dry and properly acclimatized. It can withstand occasional drops in temperature, but the combination of cold and moist substrate significantly increases the risk of root damage. During cold spells, it is recommended to reduce watering significantly.
āļø Lighting
Target guidance of 15ā25 molĀ·mā»Ā²Ā·dayā»Ā¹ of PAR DLI. High light levels promote compact growth, thicker leaves, and the appearance of reddish tones on the margins. A very bright exposure is recommended, including direct sun after gradual acclimatization.
š§ Growth cycle and irrigation
Summer dormancy. As a cultivar of Crassula ovata, it is primarily active during periods with moderate temperatures, although it can maintain growth under favorable conditions for much of the year. It should not be kept continuously moist. It is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next application. During extreme heat, activity may decrease and it is advisable to space out waterings; in winter, when temperatures are low and light decreases, water supply should be reduced even further.
šø Flowering
It produces terminal inflorescences composed of numerous small, star-shaped, white to pinkish-white flowers that contrast with the green foliage. The flowering of C. ovata usually occurs from late summer to winter, depending on the climate and exposure; in Spanish cultivation, it can appear approximately between September and February. Floral induction is favored by a period of cooler temperatures and reduced watering.
šæ Nutrition
During the active period, Desert CHOICEĀ® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and with the substrate previously hydrated. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICEĀ® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
