🌱 Morphology
Succulent form with a creeping and highly branched growth habit, which can reach about 15 cm in height and spread considerably through stems that easily root at the nodes when they come into contact with the substrate. The leaves are opposite and decussate, fleshy, narrowly lanceolate, and pointed, arranged in four rows. They emerge green or lime-green and, with intense lighting and suitable temperatures, evolve into yellow, orange, red, and even purple hues, especially at the tips. The margins feature small cilia. This coloration can cover a large part of the plant but is not a permanent character: it depends on radiation, temperature, and physiological state.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. ‘Campfire’ does not originate from a distinct natural population but is marketed as a selected form of Crassula capitella. Its horticultural origin means it does not have its own natural distribution. The species C. capitella is native to southern Africa.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. It tolerates moderate temperature drops when well-acclimated and the substrate remains dry. Persistent frosts and, especially, the combination of cold and moisture at the roots should be avoided. In protected cultivation, it can remain active for longer, provided it has good lighting and ventilation.
☀️ Lighting
Very intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. Light is essential both to maintain compact growth and to develop the characteristic reddish coloration. In full sun, after progressive acclimatization, it can acquire very intense orange-red tones; in low light, it remains predominantly green and the stems may elongate. Cool temperatures combined with high radiation are particularly conducive to coloration.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Due to its relationship with Crassula capitella and the ecological variability of the complex, it is not appropriate to impose a rigid dormancy schedule. Activity is encouraged during periods of moderate temperatures, while extreme heat can temporarily slow growth. During the active phase, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. With very high or low temperatures, watering should be significantly spaced out. Drainage must be rapid, as the creeping stems and densely clustered leaves are especially vulnerable to remaining moist for too long.
🌸 Flowering
Inflorescences appear at the end of the stems and can rise clearly above the vegetative habit. The flowers are small, white to slightly pink, and star-shaped, grouped in a branched inflorescence. Flowering can occur from spring to autumn, most frequently towards late summer and early autumn. After flowering, the rosette or stem that produced the inflorescence may lose vigor or die, while lateral branches and new shoots allow the plant to continue.
🌿 Nutrition
We recommend Desert CHOICE® Succulents during the active growth period. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering, especially when the plant receives high lighting and has developed sufficient vegetative mass.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
