🌱 Morphology
It is a small succulent with a generally monocarpic growth habit, forming a solitary rosette or, occasionally, small clusters via basal offsets. The rosette can reach about 7 cm in diameter and remains practically stemless during the vegetative phase.
The leaves are fleshy, flat, and densely arranged in a rosette. They are obovate to nearly orbicular, green to grayish-green in color, with a rounded or nearly truncate apex. Its most distinctive feature is the margin covered by long, silky white cilia, which can reach about 5 mm and give it the "bearded" appearance that gives the species its name.
When it reaches reproductive maturity, it develops a narrow, elevated terminal inflorescence, which can reach about 30 cm in height, very disproportionate to the small size of the rosette.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. It is endemic to South Africa, and its distribution is concentrated in the Cape provinces, especially in the mountains bordering the southwestern sector of the Great Karoo, from the eastern Cedarberg to the vicinity of Prince Albert.
It grows on stony slopes and gravelly terrain, often associated with large rocks and in sheltered places among vegetation or on south-facing slopes. It is found approximately between 1,000 and 1,800 m in altitude.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 8b–11b.
It tolerates low temperatures during the growth period if the substrate remains properly drained. However, its mountainous origin does not mean that it withstands every combination of cold and humidity: during cold spells with a wet substrate, extreme caution should be exercised.
The main problem in cultivation usually appears with high temperatures and persistent humidity in summer, when the plant enters a marked slowdown.
☀️ Lighting
Very high lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR during the growth period.
Intense light, combined with moderate temperatures and good ventilation, helps maintain a compact rosette and correctly develop the characteristic marginal cilia. During episodes of intense heat, it may be advisable to avoid the most aggressive solar radiation of the midday hours, especially in protected cultivation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Crassula barbata is an autumn-winter-spring growing species, adapted to the climatic regime of the Cape's mountainous areas. During the summer, high temperatures cause a strong slowdown, and the plant must be kept much drier.
During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. The frequency should be determined by the actual drying speed and the plant's growth, not by a fixed calendar.
In summer, with high temperatures, watering should be drastically reduced and excellent ventilation maintained, avoiding both waterlogging and prolonged humidity.
There is also a fundamental particularity: the rosette that flowers completes its cycle and dies after flowering, although it may have previously produced basal offsets that continue the plant. Therefore, these offsets must be preserved and can be used to propagate it.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering occurs at the end of the growth period, developing a narrow terminal inflorescence of up to about 30 cm.
The flowers are tubular, white, and frequently tinged with pink, with recurved corolla lobes. They are grouped in small, compact clusters along the inflorescence and can present a pleasant sweet scent.
In its natural habitat, flowering is documented between September and November. Under Madrid conditions, and with the seasons inverted relative to the Southern Hemisphere, it can be expected approximately between March and May, although it will depend on the thermal and cultivation regime.
🌿 Nutrition
It is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied during the active growth period and reducing or suspending fertilization during the summer, when the plant slows its activity.
Before flowering, Desert CHOICE® Flowering can be used to support the reproductive phase.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
