The tubercles are large, conical-cylindrical, grooved and somewhat oblique, up to 2.4 cm wide at the base. The areoles are densely armed with 24–26 radial spines, acicular, white to horn-colored, some of the upper ones clustered and longer. 🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Species endemic to Durango, Mexico, known from scattered populations on calcareous and stony terrain, at around 1400 m altitude, within dry scrublands and Chihuahuan Desert environments. It belongs to Cactaceae, subfamily Cactoideae, tribe Cacteae. The nomenclature follows Joël Lodé, Taxonomy of the Cactaceae (2026), volumes III–VI.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b
Tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −9 ºC in dry and well-acclimated specimens. In winter it should be kept completely dry, as the combination of cold and humidity can cause root damage.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and direct sun to develop compact spination and maintain its characteristic habit. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the warm season, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In autumn, waterings should be progressively reduced until it is kept dry throughout the winter. Its roots must have a very well-draining and aerated substrate.
🌸 Flowering
Produces large flowers, 4–8 cm in diameter, bright yellow, with a characteristic deep red throat. The filaments also exhibit reddish tones. The flowering appears in the apical zone and constitutes one of the most distinctive features of this species.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
