🌱 Morphology
Small, generally solitary cactus, although occasionally cespitose, with a globose to slightly ovoid body, matte green, about 5–8 cm in diameter. The apex appears depressed and covered with wool. The tubercles are large, conical, laterally widened and compressed, arranged in a spiral and slightly oblique, with a deep groove. The areoles are elliptical and generally present 16–20 yellowish radial spines, curved and pectinate, about 1 cm long, with brownish tips. It may develop a more robust and longer central spine, although it can be absent.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to central Mexico, with distribution mainly in Querétaro, Hidalgo, and Guanajuato, extending towards the Valley of Mexico and also appearing in San Luis Potosí and other states in the center of the country. It grows in xerophilous scrublands and grasslands, on stony and frequently limestone soils, between approximately 1400 and 2500 m. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Cacteae tribe. Nomenclature follows Joël Lodé, Taxonomía de las Cactáceas (2026), volumes III–VI.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −7 ºC in dry, well-acclimatized specimens. During winter, it must be kept completely dry to avoid cold and humidity damage.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting, although in climates with extremely hot summers, it may appreciate slight protection during the central hours of the day. High light intensity favors compact development and spination. As a general guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. Starting in autumn, watering should be progressively spaced out until kept dry during the winter. It requires a very porous and well-draining substrate.
🌸 Flowering
Produces large flowers, 6–7 cm in diameter, lemon yellow, occasionally with a reddish base. They appear in the apical zone mainly during the summer. The fruits are green and contain numerous small seeds.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
