🌱 Morphology
Among the mists... A very slow-growing Copiapoa that forms large clumps with age, branching from the base and laterally, capable of reaching approximately 2 m in diameter and up to 1 m in height. The stems are globose, ovoid to cylindrical, 12–25 cm in diameter, with a greenish-grey to grey epidermis, frequently covered by a fine pruina. It presents numerous broad and tuberculate ribs, up to about 40, with a characteristic notch below the areoles. The areoles are large and can show orange tones when young. It develops 3–7 honey-colored radial spines, thick and of similar length, and usually 0–1 central spine.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Species endemic to the coast of the Antofagasta Region, Chile, from the vicinity of Caleta Colorado south to the north of Taltal, especially in the area around Paposo. It inhabits extremely arid coastal rocky slopes, where the camanchaca (coastal fog) provides essential atmospheric moisture. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Copiapoeae tribe. The name used follows the classification by Joël Lodé, Taxonomía de las Cactáceas, volumes III–VI, 2026. Copiapoa haseltoniana, C. cinerea subsp. haseltoniana, C. cinerea var. haseltoniana, C. eremophila, and C. tenebrosa are names used historically or treated as synonyms.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures close to 0 ºC, provided it is kept completely dry and protected from frost. It comes from a coastal environment where temperatures are moderate, so its resistance to aridity should not be confused with high cold resistance.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting. In its habitat, it grows exposed to high radiation, although the camanchaca can temporarily attenuate direct radiation. In cultivation, full sun is recommended, with progressive adaptation. As a guideline, during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended. High luminosity also promotes the development of the characteristic greyish epidermis and compact spination.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. It is a species adapted to extremely arid conditions and must receive very controlled watering. During active growth, moderate watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before adding water again. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the plant is kept dry during the winter. Prolonged humidity, especially at low temperatures, must be avoided.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large, broadly funnel-shaped, pale yellow flowers, approximately 4–4.5 cm in length and up to 5 cm in diameter. They appear near the apex and contrast intensely with the grey epidermis and the brownish-orange wool. The fruits are oval, pale red, about 1.5 cm.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
