€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent, acaulescent and cespitose, about 8 cm in diameter. The leaves appear in opposing pairs and have a thick, fleshy, triangular shape, with long, soft, whitish, thread-like teeth on the margins, reminiscent of open jaws. The epidermis, ranging from light to dark green, can acquire pinkish, reddish, or purplish tones under intense light and is decorated with small white dots that provide a rough texture. In adult specimens, old leaves can form a small stem.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to the Eastern Cape, South Africa, in the vicinity of Grahamstown/Makhanda and Somerset East. It mainly inhabits the Albany Thicket, growing among rocks and partially protected by surrounding vegetation. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae. SANBI currently classifies it as Endangered (EN) due to habitat loss and degradation.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −7 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. This hardiness reference comes from horticultural sources; in its natural habitat, winter temperatures rarely drop below 0 ºC.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting to maintain its compact shape and promote the reddish or purplish coloration of the leaves. A target of DLI PAR >20 mol/m²/day is recommended during active growth. Direct sun also encourages flowering, although in very hot summers it can be protected during the central hours of the day.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. In winter, it enters dormancy and watering should be reduced to very occasional and light applications. Excess humidity during this period encourages rot.
🌸 Flowering
Large, yellow, daisy-like flowers that appear directly between the leaves and open with the light. Natural flowering occurs from autumn to winter; in Madrid, approximately between October and January.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content in assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
