🌱 Morphology
Solitary spineless cactus, with a globose to short-cylindrical body that can exceed 50 cm in height with age. It generally has 5 very marked ribs, although specimens with 3 to 7 may appear, which can increase as it ages. The epidermis is green, grayish-green, or silvery and is covered by numerous small white trichomes that form a characteristic stippling. The areoles are circular, woolly, and completely lack spines. The profile of the ribs seen from above resembles an episcopal miter, the origin of one of its common names.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to the arid and semi-arid regions of central and northeastern Mexico, mainly in San Luis Potosí, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. It grows in mountainous areas and open slopes, frequently on limestone terrain, among xerophytic scrub and desert vegetation, at an altitude of approximately 750 to 1,500 m. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −7 ºC if it remains completely dry and is properly acclimated. During the winter, it is recommended to keep it dormant and with the substrate dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting during active growth and tolerates direct sun. An approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR promotes compact growth and good expression of the epidermis and the white trichomes.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. Its growth is concentrated mainly during spring, summer, and early autumn. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, it should be kept practically dry, especially when temperatures are low. The substrate must have rapid drainage to prevent the accumulation of moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large, aromatic flowers, about 4–7 cm in diameter, of a bright yellow color, occasionally with orange or reddish tones at the base. They appear in the areoles near the apex during the warm period. In Madrid, flowering begins between May and July, but it is a repeat bloomer and can provide flowers throughout the entire season.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
