Astrophytum asterias ‘SUPERKABUTO’ CITES | Japanese Peyote
€26,50
📍This cultivar created by Japanese nurserymen originates from the botanical species native to the desert of Tamaulipas in Mexico and northern Texas in the USA.
🌱 Morphology
The original botanical species is a small, solitary cactus with a globose to hemispherical and very flattened body, which generally reaches about 5–10 cm in height and 6–15 cm in diameter. It normally has 8 ribs, although specimens with 6–10 can appear, which are very low, wide, and rounded. The epidermis is grayish-green, shiny, and sprinkled with small groups of white trichomes. The areoles are large, circular, and woolly, arranged regularly on the ribs, and lack spines. During periods of extreme drought, it can remain practically flush with the ground, making it very difficult to locate.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Its natural distribution extends through southern Texas, in the United States, and the Mexican states of Nuevo León and Tamaulipas. It inhabits mainly the Tamaulipan thornscrub, on flat terrain or gentle slopes, on clayey, silty, or gravelly soils, which are often calcareous or have a certain salinity. It grows among sparse vegetation and can temporarily withstand flooding of the terrain during the rainy season. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −7 ºC if it remains completely dry and is properly acclimatized. During winter, it is recommended to keep it dormant and with the substrate dry.
☀️ Lighting
It needs very intense lighting during active growth. It tolerates direct sun, although its low and practically flat body remains completely exposed to radiation, so in climates with very intense summers, it may appreciate slight protection during the hours of maximum insolation. An approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR promotes compact growth and good expression of the epidermis and trichomes.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. Its growth is concentrated mainly from spring to late summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In summer, it can respond especially well to water intake associated with rains in its natural habitat, even tolerating occasional periods of humidity, provided there is subsequent complete drying. In winter, it should be kept practically dry, especially at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
It produces flowers that are large in relation to the size of its body, about 3–5 cm in diameter, and bright yellow with a reddish or orange throat. They are diurnal and appear in the youngest areoles of the apical zone. In its habitat, it flowers mainly between March and May, with occasional blooms after summer rains; in Madrid, flowering occurs mainly between May and July.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
