🌱 Morphology
Small Malagasy aloe of extraordinary graphic beauty. It forms low, compact rosettes, which over time produce offsets and can form small colonies. Its lanceolate, fleshy, triangular-sectioned, grayish-green leaves are densely speckled with elongated white spots and streaks, often H-shaped, reminiscent of tiny snowflakes. The margins feature small whitish teeth. With intense lighting, the leaves can acquire reddish-brown or purplish hues, increasing the contrast with the white markings. Mature rosettes reach approximately 10–15 cm in height.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae. It is a species endemic to southern Madagascar, where it grows in dry scrub environments and rocky substrates, among shrubs and on sandstone. Aloe rauhii was described by Gilbert Westacott Reynolds and dedicated to the German botanist Werner Rauh, a specialist in the succulent flora of Madagascar.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to approximately −1 °C for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. It is especially sensitive to the combination of cold and humidity, so it is recommended to protect it from frost.
☀️ Lighting
Plenty of light–bright semi-shade. It tolerates direct sun if acclimated gradually, although in the warmer months it may benefit from some protection against the midday sun. High lighting keeps the plant compact and encourages the reddish coloration of the leaves without losing the characteristic white pattern. An approximate DLI PAR of 20–30 mol/m²/day is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Coming from a region of Madagascar with marked seasonality, it is recommended to significantly reduce watering during the hottest and driest period. During active growth, water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, it should also be kept drier, especially in low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
It produces thin floral stems of up to about 30 cm, crowned by loose clusters of pink, coral, or red-orange tubular flowers, approximately 2.5–3 cm long. Flowering is seasonal, but can occur at different times of the year depending on growing conditions and rainfall; it is especially frequent during winter.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. Apply with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
