🌱 Morphology
A small marvel of botanical engineering born from Karen Zimmerman's passion for aloes with extraordinarily serrated leaves. Aloe ‘Sawbones’ forms a compact rosette of fleshy, triangular, and arched leaves, whose most striking feature is the large, deeply cut teeth on the margins, which resemble the teeth of a saw. This is where its name comes from: sawbones is also an old English colloquial term for a surgeon. The plant can produce offsets and maintains a very uniform morphology when propagated via tissue culture.
🌍 Origin, genealogy, and family
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae. It is a horticultural hybrid created by Karen Zimmerman at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in California and introduced by the International Succulent Introductions program in 2018. Its parentage is complex and includes backcrosses with Zimmerman's ‘Confetti’ and ‘Marsha Layhew’ hybrids; the Huntington does not publish the complete cross, so a more precise genealogy should not be attributed without additional documentation.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to approximately −4 °C, provided it remains dry and protected from prolonged frosts. When potted, special caution is recommended with cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Soft sun–bright semi-shade. Intense lighting favors the compaction of the rosette and enhances leaf coloration and the contrast of its teeth. Approximately 20–30 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended, increasing the intensity progressively.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. During the warmer months, it is recommended to reduce watering and allow the substrate to dry completely between waterings. During active growth, it can be watered deeply, always with excellent drainage.
🌸 Flowering
Upon reaching maturity, it produces characteristic Aloe inflorescences, with tubular flowers that can display reddish, orange, or yellow hues.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, which has a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
12x12 cm gourmet black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
