🌱 Morphology
Generally a single-trunked Aloe, though occasionally branched, it can reach 6–8 m in height. The trunk is relatively slender for its size and retains dry leaf remnants mainly in its upper third. It forms a compact rosette of about 30–40 leaves, erect and then recurved, up to 70 cm long. They are green, smooth, and deeply channeled, with no spots or spines on the surface. The reddish margins have robust, reddish-brown triangular teeth, about 4–6 mm.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Asphodelaceae. Its natural range extends from southern Mozambique and Eswatini to KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). It mainly lives in warm valleys, rocky areas, slopes, and dense scrub and savanna forests, always in frost-free zones, with very hot, rainy summers and dry, mild winters. It is listed as Least Concern (LC).
❄️ Temperature
USDA 10a–11b as a conservative reference. It comes from practically frost-free environments, so in pots, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially if the substrate is moist. It is not an Aloe to expose to prolonged frosts.
☀️ Lighting
A species from very bright environments. During growth, target 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR. It tolerates direct sun after progressive acclimatization. In Madrid, very bright exposure is essential to maintain compact leaves and encourage good flowering.
💧 Growth cycle
Opportunistic, with growth favored by warm temperatures and spring-summer rains in its habitat. In winter, activity reduces as it coincides with its dry season, though it flowers precisely then. Water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, significantly space out waterings.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a large branched inflorescence, approximately 1–1.3 m, with numerous very dense cylindrical racemes, resembling a brush. The buds are yellow-orange and the open flowers turn an intense lemon yellow, with prominent orange-red stamens and style. In its habitat, it flowers mainly in August-September; in Madrid, approximately February-March.
🌿 Nutrition
During growth, use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthia & Co., with calcium and potassium supplementation. Reduce fertilization during the winter period of lower activity.
