🌱 Morphology
Creeping, highly branched succulent that forms dense colonies of rosettes. Stems can reach about 2 m and eventually grow upright, while rosettes reach about 15–18 cm in diameter. Leaves are short, wide, fleshy, and triangular, blue-green, with irregular longitudinal cream, yellow, or whitish areas. The margins have small light teeth. The intensity and distribution of variegation differ in each specimen.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Asphodelaceae. This is a cultivated form and not an independent wild population; it comes from Aloe mitriformis, a species native to the Cape Provinces, South Africa, where it grows in subtropical environments. Therefore, a specific natural area should not be indicated for the variegated form.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b–11b. Aloe mitriformis tolerates low temperatures when kept dry, but variegation makes it advisable to be more cautious: preferably keep it above 5 °C and protect it from frost, especially in pots.
☀️ Lighting
It needs a lot of light, but areas without chlorophyll reduce its photosynthetic capacity. Goal during growth: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. It can receive gentle direct sunlight after acclimatization, but in Madrid, it is preferable to protect it from the most intense summer afternoon sun to avoid burns on the variegated areas.
💧 Growth cycle
Opportunistic, although its growth clearly slows down with extreme summer heat. During the active period: Water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In winter, space out waterings according to temperature and light.
🌸 Flowering
Branched inflorescences protruding from the rosettes, with tubular flowers usually scarlet red to orange-red. In Aloe mitriformis, flowering mainly occurs in summer; in Madrid, it can appear approximately between June and September, depending on cultivation conditions.
