🌱 Morphology
This is a shrubby Aloe, generally with one or few stems, which in old specimens can reach up to 1.5 m. The rosettes have about 30–40 lanceolate leaves, 20–40 × 4–9 cm, green and covered with numerous very characteristic longitudinal lines. The upper surface is flat or slightly grooved and the underside is convex. The reddish, horny margins have sharp, triangular teeth, also reddish.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to South Africa, mainly in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces, from the Riversdale area to Grahamstown. It inhabits low-rainfall areas, especially in Succulent Veld, dense scrub, Albany Thicket, fynbos-renosterveld, and karroid scrub. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b–11b. It comes from regions where it can experience light frosts, but it needs a very well-draining substrate to withstand them. In pots, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, and it can occasionally tolerate temperatures near -4°C if it is completely dry and protected. It is not advisable to combine cold, humidity, and wet roots.
☀️ Lighting
During growth, 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR. It needs a lot of light to maintain its compact habit and to make its characteristic reddish longitudinal lines visible. It tolerates full sun after gradual acclimatization; in Madrid, it appreciates some protection from extreme sun accompanied by very high temperatures in July and August.
💧 Growth cycle
Opportunistic, it does not have a rigid annual dormancy period. Its habitat receives irregular rainfall that can occur at different times of the year, so it responds to favorable periods of temperature and water availability. Water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. During phases of extreme cold or heat, space out waterings and avoid keeping the substrate wet.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a simple, very tall inflorescence, up to approximately 1.2 m, with a dense cluster of cylindrical flowers from salmon pink to deep pink, about 3–5 cm long. The var. lineata mainly flowers in Madrid between August–September, although the date may vary depending on cultivation conditions.
