🌱 Morphology
A small plant volcano that changes its appearance with the light. Aloe ‘Krakatoa’ is a hybrid with a compact and upright habit, featuring a rosette up to about 20 cm tall and 22 cm in diameter. Its lanceolate, slightly triangular leaves grow vertically and display a characteristic combination of white ridges, bars, and bumps, along with a serrated margin that takes on intense red tones. With abundant light and some water stress, it develops a spectacular range of greens, purples, oranges, and reddish hues. It produces offsets from the base and forms clumps easily.
🌍 Origin, genealogy, and family
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae. It is a hybrid created by Kelly Griffin in Vista, California. The cross was made in November 2016, using Aloe ‘White Lightning’ as the female parent and the hybrid Aloe divaricata × Aloe ‘Coral Fire’ × Aloe ‘White Lightning’ as the male parent. The plant was selected in 2017 and subsequently stabilized through tissue culture propagation.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of approximately 0 °C. The patent indicates tolerance from 0 °C to at least 35 °C. When grown in pots, it is recommended to protect it from frost and prolonged cold dampness.
☀️ Lighting
Mild sun–bright partial shade. With higher light intensity and less water availability, it develops a much more spectacular coloration, while in shade, the leaves remain predominantly green and less contrasted. Approximately 20–30 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended, ensuring any increase in light is done gradually.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. During the warmest months, it is recommended to space out waterings, letting the substrate dry completely between them. During active growth periods, it can be watered deeply, provided that drainage is excellent.
🌸 Flowering
One of its great virtues is its ability to rebloom. Under the growing conditions described in the patent, it can produce 3–4 flowerings per year. The inflorescences reach about 30 cm and feature tubular flowers of approximately 2.5 cm, red on the outside and yellow on the inside. The flowering can last for about six weeks.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
