🌱 Morphology
Small botanical species from Madagascar, highly prized for its unusual appearance within the Aloe genus. It forms a low, compact rosette that over time can produce offsets and become a small colony. Its leaves are narrow, fleshy, and elongated, in a deep green to grey-green color, with a particularly distinctive texture: the entire surface features small raised tubercles or whitish dots that give it a finely pearlescent appearance. The margins are lined with small light-colored teeth. The overall appearance is delicate and light, very different from broad-leaved, robust aloes. Adult specimens can reach approximately 20–30 cm in diameter.
🌍 Origin and family
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, genus Aloe. It is a botanical species described by Jean-Bernard Castillon and published in CactusWorld in 2013. It is endemic to Madagascar, and its type locality is in the central highlands, in the former province of Fianarantsoa, on rocky mountains southwest of the Ibity massif. It grows in seasonally dry, rocky environments. The species is considered Endangered (EN).
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures of up to approximately −4 °C for short periods and with dry substrate. In cultivation, it should be protected from prolonged frosts and, especially, from the combination of low temperatures and wet roots.
☀️ Lighting
Bright light–soft sun. Intense lighting promotes compact growth and makes the whitish texture of the leaves easier to appreciate. A DLI PAR of 20–30 mol/m²/day is recommended, with gradual adaptation to direct sunlight. During very intense summer sun, it may benefit from some protection during the middle of the day.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the cold months, watering should be greatly reduced, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. At low temperatures, it should be kept almost completely dry. During active growth, water thoroughly and only water again when the substrate is completely dry.
🌸 Flowering
It can begin flowering relatively early for such a small species. A specimen obtained from a cutting was documented to flower in approximately three years. In cultivation, flowering can occur during winter and early spring, with inflorescences that stand out clearly from the small rosette and tubular flowers in shades of orange to coral red.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of bioavailable potassium and calcium. Apply with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during winter dormancy.
