🌱 Morphology
Shrubby aloe, very branched, that can reach 2–3 m and form large groups. The stems, over time, become woody and end in dense rosettes of fleshy, arched and lanceolate leaves, gray-green or bluish. The margins have triangular teeth, generally yellowish and relatively spaced. The roots are fibrous and the species produces numerous offshoots, so it can form extensive colonies.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A species of Asphodelaceae widely distributed throughout southeastern Africa: South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. It primarily inhabits rocky outcrops, slopes, and cliffs, often in mountainous areas with high summer rainfall, though it also appears in regions with winter rainfall like the Cape. It is found from virtually sea level up to about 2,800 m.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b–11b. In cultivation, it tolerates brief periods of cold and a few degrees below zero, but frost can seriously damage leaves and flowers. For potted plants, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, and it can temporarily withstand temperatures close to -4°C if the substrate remains completely dry and it is protected from humidity and cold wind.
☀️ Lighting
During growth, 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. It tolerates partial shade, but full sun promotes a more compact structure, a bluish coloration, and, above all, abundant flowering. In Madrid, it should be progressively acclimated to intense summer sun.
💧 Growth Cycle
Opportunistic, with a summer slowdown in conditions of extreme heat and drought. In spring and autumn, it can grow actively, taking advantage of moderate temperatures and water availability. In cultivation: water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. Significantly reduce watering during periods of extreme heat and in winter.
🌸 Flowering
It produces spectacular erect inflorescences, usually simple, densely covered with tubular flowers. Natural flowering is concentrated between late autumn and winter; in Madrid, this usually corresponds approximately to November-February. The flowers can be red, red-orange, orange, or yellow, depending on the origin of the population.
