🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small vegetable fountain in which each leaf has decided to draw its own spiral. From the bulb arise numerous greyish-green, narrow, and fleshy leaves, which twist and curl into true corkscrews. When grown in full sun, its compact and glaucous silver appearance is especially striking.
It is a bulbous geophyte approximately 10–20 cm tall, with suberect, narrow, cross-sectionally flat, glaucous, and strongly curled leaves. It can produce between 10 and 20 leaves per bulb. The inflorescence rises above the foliage and bears firm, yellow flowers with broad green keels.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is native to Namibia and South Africa, extending across Bushmanland, Namaqualand, and various areas of the Cape provinces as far as the Little Karoo and Uniondale. It lives mainly in stony plains and gravelly terrain, environments in which the bulb allows it to survive unfavorable periods. Kew currently recognizes Albuca concordiana as an accepted species.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 8b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −7 ºC in dry, well-acclimated specimens during brief exposures. During dormancy, the bulb withstands considerably lower temperatures than the active vegetation, but it should be kept from remaining wet during episodes of intense cold.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very abundant light to develop compact leaves and promote its characteristic curling. It can be grown in full sun, with progressive acclimatization, or in a very bright location. Insufficient light tends to produce longer, more open, and less curly leaves.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter growth and summer dormancy. Its active period begins with the drop in temperatures and the first rains. During growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. After flowering, the leaves begin to dry out and the bulb enters dormancy during the warm season. In summer, it must be kept practically dry to avoid bulb rot.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering occurs mainly between August and September in its natural range, coinciding with the start of the favorable period. The flowers are yellow, with broad green keels that run along the tepals and stand out against the glaucous foliage.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer specific to succulents with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Suculentas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering.
