🌱 Morphology
A hybrid Agave with a large habit and relatively fast growth, forming a rosette approximately 1.5 m tall and up to 2 m in diameter. The leaves are long, fleshy, and gently arched, blue-gray in color, with a more flexible silhouette than Agave americana. The margins feature small, regularly spaced teeth, and the apex ends in a short, grayish to reddish spine. It produces offsets with some ease, although in smaller quantities than some of its parents, potentially forming a small colony over time.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It has no known natural distribution as it is a hybrid of horticultural origin. It was described from material cultivated in Ludwig Winter's garden in Bordighera (Italy) and was later documented as an escaped cultivated plant on the Iberian Peninsula. The most frequently cited parental combination is Agave americana × Agave franzosinii, although the possible involvement of A. sisalana has also been suggested.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae · Nothospecies Agave × winteriana A.Berger.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. Well-established adult plants can withstand approximately −8 ºC in very dry conditions, while young specimens are more sensitive to cold. Winter humidity significantly increases the risk of damage.
☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun and abundant light to develop a compact rosette and maintain the bluish hue of the leaves. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Growth is primarily spring-summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, water intake is gradually reduced, and during winter, it is kept practically dry. The combination of cold and humidity is especially unfavorable.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic: the main rosette flowers only once and subsequently dies, although the plant can perpetuate itself through lateral rosettes. Under cultivation conditions, it can reach floral maturity at approximately 15 years. The inflorescence rises to 5–7 m, is highly branched, with clusters of pale yellow flowers about 7–10 cm long. Flowering occurs mainly during the summer and can last for several months.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its contribution of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance to stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. Routine addition of a specific flowering fertilizer is not recommended for agaves.
