🌱 Morphology
A fast-growing, large-sized agave that forms an open rosette approximately 1–1.5 m tall and 1.8–3 m in diameter. The leaves are long, fleshy, and flexible, ranging in color from light green to grayish-green or bluish-green, and can reach 1–1.6 m in length. The margins are practically smooth along most of the leaf, featuring only small teeth, primarily toward the base. A dark, sharp terminal spine, about 3–4.5 cm long, tips each leaf. It produces basal offsets and can form large clumps over time.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Its recognized native range is in northeastern Mexico, mainly in San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas, where it grows in dry environments and scrublands. The species has long been cultivated in Mexico, and naturalized populations exist in Texas and Florida. Its horticultural history is complex, and some cultivated populations may have a human-selected origin.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −12 ºC for brief periods, provided the substrate is completely dry. Resistance appears to vary between specimens and provenances; cold combined with humidity is significantly more dangerous.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light and direct sun to develop a compact rosette and intensely colored foliage. In climates with extremely hot summers, it can be grown with light protection during midday hours without losing high luminosity. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Growth mainly during spring and summer. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. It is a drought-tolerant species and relatively fast-growing for an agave. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the plant is kept practically dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic: after a single flowering, the rosette dies, although it usually produces a moderate number of offsets that allow for the plant's continuity in cultivation. The enormous panicle can reach approximately 6–8 m, exceptionally more, and develops numerous yellow flowers. Flowering occurs mainly in late spring and early summer. In cultivation, it may begin at approximately 10–20 years, although age depends greatly on growing conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its contribution of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance to stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally strong rosette. It is not recommended to routinely add a specific flowering fertilizer for agaves.
