🌱 Morphology
A relatively fast-growing hybrid agave with a compact habit, forming a solitary rosette, although it may produce offsets and form small clusters with age. The leaves are fleshy, rigid, and pointed, bluish-green to greenish-blue in color, arranged regularly and slightly arched. The feature that gives the hybrid its name is its spectacular ruby-red margin, which contrasts with the bluish epidermis and can intensify with high light exposure. The margins are generally smooth and practically devoid of teeth, although each leaf retains a sharp terminal spine. In adult specimens, it can reach approximately 60 cm in height and 1 m in diameter.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It has no natural distribution of its own, as it is a horticultural hybrid. Its appearance and commercial genealogy are related to small and medium-sized Mexican agaves, and some sources link it specifically to Agave romani. It is grown for its exceptional combination of bluish leaves and red edges, a feature uncommon among ornamental agaves.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −7 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. Some cultivation sources place its resistance at approximately −8 to −10 ºC, but for cultivation in Spain, it is safer to consider −7 ºC as a restrictive benchmark. Wet cold should be especially avoided.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light and direct sun, although it can adapt to partial sun. Intense lighting favors the compaction of the rosette and, especially, the intensity of the red edge. In very hot summers, it may appreciate some protection during the central hours of the day. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Growth mainly in spring and summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, intake is gradually reduced, and it is kept practically dry during winter. Rapid drainage is essential to avoid damage to the rosette and roots.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic: the rosette that reaches reproductive maturity flowers once and then dies, although offsets can perpetuate the plant. It develops a large floral stalk with numerous flowers, but no sufficiently documented age of first flowering has been found to establish a reliable number of years. In ornamental cultivation, flowering is rare and remains far behind the main interest of this plant: its spectacular greenish-blue, red-rimmed rosette.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its supply of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance to stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. Adding a specific flowering fertilizer routinely is not recommended for agaves.
