Agave lophantha — Maguey mezortillo
🌿 Morphology: A medium-sized agave with a compact and very prolific rosette, capable of forming large colonies through offsets. Its leaves are stiff, narrow, and lanceolate, bright green, often with a lighter central band and yellow margins. They have small marginal teeth and a characteristic dark terminal spine. Individual rosettes are monocarpic and die after flowering.
🌍 Origin and habitat: Family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae. Its natural range extends from Texas (USA) to northeastern and north-central Mexico, including Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. It lives in dry scrublands, semi-arid plains, rocky outcrops, and calcareous soils, from areas near sea level to mountainous regions.
🌡️ Temperature: Approximately USDA 8–11. It is one of the agaves with good cold hardiness and can withstand approximately −9 °C in dry conditions. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above −7 °C, avoiding the roots remaining wet during frost episodes.
☀️ Light: During active growth, we recommend an approximate DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR. It prefers intense light and develops a more compact rosette with abundant light, although it can tolerate bright semi-shade in very hot climates.
💧 Watering and dormancy: It is primarily opportunistic, capable of growing whenever it has adequate temperatures and water. During spring-summer, water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn and winter, significantly reduce frequency and keep it practically dry during cold periods.
🌸 Flowering: It produces a spectacular vertical inflorescence that can reach 3–4.5 m, with yellowish-green flowers. Flowering is concentrated mainly between March and June. The flowering rosette dies afterward, but the abundant production of offsets allows the colony to continue developing.
🧪 Nutrition: During active growth, fertilize with Desert CHOICE Succulents at a moderate and regular dose. Gradually reduce fertilization at the end of the growing season and suspend it during cold periods.
