Agave geminiflora | Twin-flowered agave

🌱 Morphology
An agave with an extraordinarily elegant habit that forms a dense, almost spherical, and typically solitary rosette, about 60–90 cm in height and diameter. It can have between 100 and 200 linear, narrow, and flexible leaves, approximately 40–60 cm long and barely 5–8 mm wide. They are dark green to grayish-green and arch gently in all directions, creating the appearance of a botanical fountain. The margins are smooth, without teeth, and can develop numerous curly white filaments, although the quantity of these filaments varies considerably between specimens. Each leaf ends in a small, rigid tip.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a species with a very localized distribution in Mexico, mainly in the state of Nayarit, where it grows in dry environments and scrublands, especially in rocky areas and open forests. It is found at approximately 650 to 1,950 m altitude. Its restricted natural range has led to its consideration as Vulnerable in the IUCN assessment.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −6 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. Some horticultural sources note established specimens capable of occasionally withstanding temperatures close to −8 ºC, but there is considerable variability and damp cold is especially dangerous.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light, from direct sun to bright partial shade. Intense lighting keeps the rosette dense and favors the formation of a compact structure, although in the most extreme summers it may appreciate light protection during the central hours of the day. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Growth mainly during spring and summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced, and it is kept practically dry during winter, especially in low temperatures. Drainage is essential to prevent rot of the fleshy base.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic and typically flowers only once before dying. Flowering can begin at approximately 10 years of age, although maturity depends on cultivation conditions. It develops a spectacular unbranched spike of about 3–5 m, with flowers arranged in pairs—hence the epithet geminiflora, "twin-flowered." The flowers, about 5–6 cm long, are greenish or yellowish and may show reddish or purplish tones. Flowering occurs mainly between late spring and summer. As it produces few offsets, propagation by seed takes on special importance.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its contribution of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance against stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. It is not recommended to routinely add a specific flowering fertilizer to agaves.
