🌱 Morphology
A relatively fast-growing agave that forms elegant, symmetrical rosettes of lanceolate, thick, and fleshy leaves that arch outward. The leaves are grayish-green to glaucous green, with characteristic cream-yellow variegation on the margins. They have very few marginal teeth or may be practically spineless, but they end in a reddish apical spine that darkens with age. It can reach approximately 60–90 cm in height and up to 90–120 cm in diameter, forming clusters through numerous offsets.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It belongs to the Asparagaceae family, subfamily Agavoideae. The species is associated with northwestern Mexico, especially Sinaloa, although its natural origin is somewhat uncertain and much of the historically known material comes from cultivation. The names Agave desmettiana, A. desmetiana, A. miradorensis, and A. regeliana appear in its synonymy.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to approximately −4 ºC in dry conditions, although winter humidity combined with cold can cause damage and rot.
☀️ Lighting
It prefers full sun or very intense light. Approximately 18–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR promotes compact growth and good expression of the variegation. In very hot climates, it may appreciate light protection during the hours of maximum radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It grows mainly during warm periods. Deep watering followed by complete drying of the substrate is recommended. Once established, it tolerates drought well. During the winter, watering is significantly reduced and the substrate is kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic: after reaching maturity, it can produce a spectacular floral scape of about 2–3 m, with a large panicle of small pale yellow flowers. The inflorescence can produce numerous aerial bulbils. After completing the flowering process, the rosette dies.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
