Agave bracteosa | Agave squid
€10,60
🌿 Morphology: A small agave with an open rosette, typically 40–60 cm, formed by narrow, fleshy, green leaves arching outwards, reminiscent of squid tentacles. The margins have tiny serrations, but it lacks a terminal spine. It produces numerous offsets and can form compact clusters.
🌍 Origin and habitat: Family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae. Native to northeastern Mexico (Coahuila and Nuevo León), where it grows between 900 and 1,750 m, mainly on cliffs, slopes, and limestone rock crevices in desert environments and xerophytic scrublands. It is a true rupicolous and xerophytic species.
🌡️ Temperature: Approximately USDA 8–11. It is one of the relatively cold-hardy agaves; cultivated specimens have withstood around −7 °C without damage, although resistance depends heavily on the dryness of the substrate and the duration of the cold. For Spain, we recommend keeping it above −5 °C and completely dry during frost episodes.
☀️ Light: During active growth, we recommend an approximate DLI of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ PAR. It tolerates everything from full sun to bright partial shade. In Spanish regions with very hot summers, slight protection during the hottest hours can prevent yellowing or scorching, especially for potted plants.
💧 Watering and dormancy: It is primarily a summer grower, although it can grow when temperatures are mild. In spring-summer, water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. It is more water-tolerant than other agaves, but drainage must be excellent. In autumn-winter, greatly reduce watering and keep it practically dry during cold or rainy periods.
🌸 Flowering: In summer, it produces a spectacular, unbranched flower spike approximately 1.5–2 m tall, densely covered at the top with cream-white to pale yellow flowers. Flowering usually occurs between May and July. The flowering rosette may die, although the plant typically perpetuates itself through basal offsets.
🧪 Nutrition: During spring and summer, coinciding with its growth period, fertilize with Desert CHOICE Succulents. Gradually reduce fertilization at the end of summer and suspend it during the cold or dormant period.
