Aeonium ‘Sunburst’
€10,60
🌿 Morphology: A variegated cultivar of an arborescent and highly branched habit, with woody stems that can reach about 50–70 cm and large rosettes up to 20–30 cm in diameter. Its leaves are fleshy, spatulate, and feature spectacular variegation in greyish-green, white-cream, and yellow, with the margins acquiring pink, red, or coppery tones when exposed to ample light. The intensity of the coloring increases with luminosity and cool temperatures.
🧬 Botanical Origin: Family Crassulaceae. ‘Sunburst’ is an old horticultural cultivar, introduced by Huntington Botanical Gardens in 1993 as Aeonium decorum ‘Sunburst’. It was later determined that this identification was incorrect. It is currently considered probably a variegated form of Aeonium davidbramwellii, a species endemic to La Palma, although there is no definitive genetic proof of its parentage. Therefore, the most prudent name is simply Aeonium ‘Sunburst’.
🌎 Distribution and Habitat
It has no natural distribution of its own as it is a cultivar. Its possible progenitor, A. davidbramwellii, is native to La Palma (Canary Islands). The species A. decorum, with which it was initially identified, is native to La Gomera and northeastern Tenerife.
❄️ USDA and Temperature
USDA approximately 9b–11b. We recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially in pots and with humidity. It can tolerate brief drops close to 0 °C if completely dry, but we do not recommend exposing it to frost.
☀️ Illumination — DLI
During growth: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR. It needs a lot of light to maintain variegation and develop the characteristic pink edges, but in Mediterranean climates, it should be gradually acclimated to intense sun.
💧 Cycle and Watering
It grows primarily during the cool seasons and may enter summer dormancy at high temperatures. Water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. During very hot summers, space out waterings considerably and avoid prolonged humidity.
🌸 Flowering
It produces branched inflorescences with numerous white flowers, mainly during the summer. The rosette that flowers is monocarpic, although the specimen can retain other rosettes and numerous branches.
🌱 Nutrition
During active growth, use Desert CHOICE Succulents at a moderate and regular dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy and at very low temperatures.
📏 Gourmet xerophyte in 14x14 cm and 17x17 cm pots.
