🌱 Morphology: Robust, generally unbranched aeonium, with a short, thick, woody stem up to about 60 cm. It forms a large terminal rosette of 30–50 cm, exceptionally larger, with very thick, fleshy, obovate to suborbicular leaves, green, coppery or reddish depending on exposure. The roots are fibrous, adapted to rocky and very well-drained soils. It is monocarpic: the rosette dies after flowering.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family: Exclusive endemic to La Palma (Canary Islands), where it lives mainly on cliffs, rocky slopes, and very sunny arid or semi-arid areas, especially on south and west exposures, approximately between sea level and 700–800 m. It belongs to the family Crassulaceae and the section Megalonium, of which it is the only species.
❄️ Cold hardiness: approximately USDA 9b–11b. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially in pots. It can withstand occasional drops close to 0 °C if it remains completely dry and protected, but it does not tolerate frost well.
☀️ Lighting: heliophilous species. Approximate target during growth: 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI (PAR). It appreciates a lot of light and direct sun after progressive acclimatization; high light also favors its reddish and coppery tones.
💧 Cycle and watering: growth mainly in autumn, winter, and spring, with dormancy or strong slowdown during warm summer. During growth, water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In summer, reduce watering significantly when temperatures are high.
🌸 Flowering: spectacular terminal inflorescence, very large and dense, with numerous star-shaped flowers of intense red, dark red to coppery, an exceptional coloration within Aeonium. Flowering occurs mainly between May and July, although it can extend until early autumn. After flowering, the rosette dies.
🌿 Nutrition: during the growth period, use Desert CHOICE at a moderate dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
