Aeonium 'Medusa'
ā¬10,60
šæ Morphology: A bushy, variegated cultivar, highly branched and relatively vigorous in growth. It forms rosettes of wide, fleshy, spatulate leaves, with a rounded or slightly pointed apex. Its most spectacular feature is its changing coloration: the leaves can display green, cream, pink, scarlet red, and very dark purple-brown, with a characteristic central band that can appear almost black. The intensity of the colors increases with light and growing conditions. It produces numerous offsets and quickly forms compact clumps.
𧬠Botanical Origin
Family Crassulaceae. āMedusaā is a horticultural cultivar that arose from a mutation of āAeoniumā āVelourā. āVelourā, in turn, is a hybrid of Aeonium canariense Ć Aeonium arboreum āZwartkopā. Therefore, A. canariense and A. arboreum are part of the genealogy of āMedusaā, although the mutation that originated the cultivar occurred on āVelourā.
š Distribution and Habitat
āMedusaā does not exist in nature and has no natural geographical distribution. It is a cultivar discovered in the Netherlands and subsequently propagated and spread internationally. Its wild ancestors come from Macaronesia, mainly the Canary Islands.
āļø USDA and Temperature
USDA approximately 9bā11b. We recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially in pots and with moist substrate. It is sensitive to frost and prolonged periods of sub-zero temperatures.
āļø Lighting ā DLI
During growth: 15ā25 molĀ·mā»Ā²Ā·dayā»Ā¹ PAR. It needs high light to develop its red and dark purple colors. It is advisable to gradually acclimatize it to direct sun and protect it from intense midday sun during periods of extreme heat.
š§ Cycle and Watering
Like other Aeonium, it exhibits growth mainly during cool seasons and a reduction in activity in summer, although āMedusaā seems to tolerate heat better than some highly variegated cultivars. Water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. During heatwaves, significantly reduce watering and prevent the roots from remaining wet when the plant is practically dormant.
šø Flowering
The flowering of āMedusaā is poorly documented in the specialized sources consulted. Due to its belonging to the Aeonium group, terminal inflorescences with small yellow flowers can be expected, but I would not yet assign a specific month as a specific datum for the cultivar.
š± Nutrition
During active growth, use Desert CHOICE at moderate and regular doses. Reduce or suspend fertilization during the phase of strong summer slowdown and with low temperatures.
