🌿 Morphology A hybrid cultivar with a bushy, compact, and highly branched habit, featuring fleshy rosettes at the ends of its stems. The leaves display spectacular tricolor variegation, combining green in the central area with creamy yellow on the margins, which can develop pink, reddish, or burgundy tones with high light, cold, or some water stress. It is more compact and produces more branching than many other variegated Aeoniums.
🧬 Botanical Origin Family Crassulaceae. ‘Mardi Gras’ was created in California in 2007 by Renee O’Connell by crossing the hybrid ‘#13’ × ‘Velour’. ‘#13’ was in turn derived from the cross of Aeonium arboreum ‘Tricolor’ × ‘Garnet’. Therefore, A. arboreum is documented in its genealogy, but ‘Mardi Gras’ should be considered a horticultural hybrid, not a variety of Aeonium arboreum.
🌎 Distribution and Habitat
It has no natural distribution of its own: it is a cultivar obtained and selected in cultivation. Its lineage includes species and cultivars of Aeonium of Macaronesian origin. Aeonium arboreum, one of its documented ancestors, is native to the Canary Islands and also to southwestern Morocco.
❄️ USDA and Temperature
USDA approximately 9b–11b. We recommend keeping it above 5 °C (41 °F), especially in pots and with moist substrate. Moderate cold and increased light intensify its reddish tones, but frost can seriously damage the tissues.
☀️ Lighting — DLI
During growth: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ PAR. It needs a lot of light to maintain compact variegation and develop its characteristic colors. In Mediterranean climates, it is advisable to progressively acclimate it to intense summer sun.
💧 Cycle and Watering
Like other Aeonium, it primarily grows during cool and humid seasons and may enter summer dormancy with intense heat. Water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. During very hot summers, space out waterings considerably and avoid keeping the substrate moist.
🌸 Flowering
Produces branched inflorescences with numerous small yellow flowers, generally from late winter to spring. As in other Aeonium, the rosette that flowers is monocarpic, although the plant can retain numerous lateral shoots.
🌱 Nutrition
During active growth phases, use Desert CHOICE Succulents at a moderate and regular dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy and at very low temperatures.
