🌱 Morphology: Bushy succulent, erect or somewhat creeping, that can reach about 60 cm in height, with branched stems, woody at the base and marked by leaf scars. The rosettes are located at the ends of the branches. Its leaves, 1.5–11 cm, are spatulate or obovate, fleshy, green and with a very characteristic ciliated margin; they may have a lighter central line and acquire reddish tones with intense light. It can produce aerial roots on the branches.
🌍 Distribution and habitat: Species accepted by Kew, belonging to Crassulaceae, distributed from Eritrea and Ethiopia to Somalia, Kenya, Uganda and northern Tanzania, as well as Yemen. It lives in mountainous areas, in rock crevices, walls and also as an epiphyte on trees, mainly in dry evergreen forests and mountain scrub, approximately between 900 and 2,800 m depending on the region. Aeonium chrysanthum is currently a synonym.
❄️ Hardiness: USDA approximately 9a–11b. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C. Its origin in tropical mountains allows for some tolerance to cool temperatures, but we do not recommend frost or prolonged cold with damp substrate.
☀️ Light: Approximate target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI-PAR during growth. It needs a lot of light to maintain a compact habit and promote reddish tones, but in Madrid it is advisable to protect it from the most intense sun during heat waves.
💧 Cycle and watering: It is an opportunistic Aeonium, conditioned by temperature and water availability, rather than a strictly rigid summer dormancy. In warm conditions it can slow down significantly. During growth, water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. Reduce water with extreme temperatures and during any period of inactivity.
🌸 Flowering: Produces a dense terminal inflorescence, ovoid or dome-shaped, up to about 27 cm in diameter, with numerous yellow flowers, generally with 8–10 petals. The flowering season depends on the population and climate.
🌿 Nutrition: During the active period, Desert CHOICE at moderate doses. Reduce or suspend fertilization when the plant is slowed down by heat or cold.
