Aeonium haworthii ‘Kiwi’
€15,90
🌿 Morphology: A compact and highly branched cultivar, with numerous stems ending in small rosettes 7–12 cm in diameter. The leaves are fleshy, spatulate, and pointed, with spectacular tricolor variegation: creamy yellow in the central area, green towards the margins, and a thin pink, red, or reddish band on the edge, whose intensity increases with light exposure. It produces abundant lateral shoots and can form small bushy clumps.
🧬 Botanical Origin
Family Crassulaceae. ‘Kiwi’ —also sold as ‘Dream Color’ or ‘Tricolor’— is a horticultural cultivar with a complex historical identity. Traditionally, it has been considered a variegated selection of Aeonium haworthii, but there are morphological arguments to consider it a hybrid of A. haworthii × A. decorum. This hypothesis has not been formally proven, so for a rigorous description, we recommend simply calling it Aeonium ‘Kiwi’, indicating its affinity with A. haworthii.
🌎 Distribution and Habitat
It has no natural distribution of its own as it is a cultivar. Aeonium haworthii, one of the species involved in its identification and possible genealogy, is endemic to Tenerife (Canary Islands), where it grows in rocky and coastal environments.
❄️ USDA and Temperature
USDA approximately 9b–11b. We recommend keeping it above 5 °C, protecting it from frost. A dry and well-acclimated specimen can withstand brief drops close to 0 °C, but in a pot, it is preferable to avoid these conditions.
☀️ Lighting — DLI
During growth: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR. Intense lighting maintains the tricolor pattern and promotes the characteristic reddish edge. It should be progressively acclimated to direct sun to avoid burns, especially after summer.
💧 Cycle and Watering
It grows mainly during the cool seasons and has summer dormancy with high temperatures. Water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. During warm summers, space out waterings considerably and avoid prolonged humidity.
🌸 Flowering
It produces branched inflorescences with small golden yellow flowers, mainly during summer. As with other Aeonium, the rosette that flowers is monocarpic, although abundant branching allows the specimen to continue developing.
🌱 Nutrition
During active growth, use Desert CHOICE at a moderate and regular dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy and when temperatures are low.
