Aeonium 'Black Magic'
€21,20
🌿 Morphology: A compact, branched hybrid cultivar, with stems that end in rosettes of long, narrow, flat, and pointed leaves. The foliage is green when it receives little light, but develops spectacular very dark purple, almost black coloration, especially with high light and lower water availability. It produces numerous shoots around the rosettes and forms dense, elegant clumps.
🧬 Botanical origin
Family Crassulaceae. ‘Black Magic’ is an English hybrid cultivar associated with Penberth Plants. Its genealogy is not officially documented; a specialized hypothesis considers it to be derived from Aeonium simsii × Aeonium ‘Schwarzkopf’ (= ‘Zwartkop’), based on the leaf shape and its floral behavior.
There is, however, a historical discrepancy: some collector catalogs identify ‘Black Magic’ with Aeonium ‘Carmen’, a hybrid of A. simsii × A. arboreum ‘Zwartkop’.
🌎 Distribution and habitat
It has no natural distribution of its own as it is a cultivar. Its possible progenitors are Macaronesian: A. simsii comes from the Canary Islands and ‘Zwartkop’ derives from A. arboreum.
❄️ USDA and temperature
USDA approximately 9b–11b. We recommend keeping it above 5 °C, protecting it from frost. In winter, it can tolerate cool temperatures if kept dry.
☀️ Lighting — DLI
During growth: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ PAR. It needs a lot of light to develop its characteristic dark pigmentation. The coloration intensifies with high light and some water restriction, but it must be progressively acclimatized to direct sunlight.
💧 Cycle and watering
Growth mainly during cool seasons, with summer dormancy when temperatures are very high. Water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. During warm summer, significantly reduce frequency and avoid excess humidity.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small yellow flowers grouped in inflorescences. An unusual characteristic attributed to ‘Black Magic’ is that it can also produce flowers from lateral rosettes, so the specimen can maintain its main structure longer than other Aeonium.
🌱 Nutrition
During active growth, use Desert CHOICE at a moderate and regular dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy and low temperatures.
