Aeonium aureum
€10,60
🌱 Morphology: A very compact succulent, with very short stems and densely imbricated rosettes of about 8–25 cm in diameter. The leaves are fleshy, obovate-spatulate, glaucous green, with a translucent margin and a glabrous surface. In summer, it can close its leaves, forming a characteristic very compact, almost spherical rosette, which reduces water loss. After flowering, the blooming rosette dies, although the plant can be maintained through other rosettes.
🌍 Distribution and habitat: It is an endemic species of the Canary Islands, present in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro, but absent from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. It primarily grows between 400 and 2,000 m, on cliffs, walls, and rocky, humid, and relatively shady slopes, especially in pine forest areas and mixed forests. Family Crassulaceae. Its old name Greenovia aurea continues to be widely used in horticulture.
❄️ Hardiness: Approximately USDA 9a–11b. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, although dry and well-acclimated specimens can tolerate temperatures close to 0 °C for brief periods. Avoid frost and, especially, cold combined with humidity.
☀️ Lighting: Approximate target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI-PAR during growth. It needs a lot of light, but it comes from cooler and more humid environments than many Aeonium; in Madrid, it should be protected from intense sun and extreme summer heat.
💧 Cycle and watering: Growth mainly during autumn, winter, and spring, with a marked slowdown and rosette closure during summer. During growth, water thoroughly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. During summer, significantly reduce watering and keep it cool and well-ventilated.
🌸 Flowering: Produces a spectacular inflorescence up to about 45 cm, with numerous intensely yellow flowers, exceptionally large and with an extraordinary number of floral parts. Flowering usually occurs in spring-summer.
🌿 Nutrition: During the active period, Desert CHOICE at a moderate dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
