🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent, erect to decumbent and sparsely branched, reaching approximately 15 cm in height and 9 cm in diameter. The stems are short, fleshy, brownish-gray in color, and may be partially hidden by the leaves. The leaves are highly variable depending on their origin: they measure approximately 3–9.5 × 0.5–1.7 cm, are oblong-lanceolate to elliptical, flattened on the upper surface and convex on the lower, with a cuneate base and obtuse apex. Their color ranges from grayish-green to silvery-gray, and purple or reddish spots frequently appear. There are populations with very elongated and narrow leaves, and others with short and thick leaves.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Family Crassulaceae. Its natural range covers the north and west of South Africa and extends into Namibia. It lives mainly in the Succulent Karoo, on sandstone, granite, and quartzite, often among shrubs or in small crevices and rocky shelters. It is an extraordinarily geographically variable species.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −3 ºC, provided the substrate remains dry and there is good ventilation. Although some specimens may withstand occasional lower drops, cold combined with humidity considerably increases the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting
Indicative DLI PAR: 12–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. It requires high luminosity to maintain compactness and promote the appearance of purple spots, but forms with more delicate leaves can suffer burns from intense sun during the central hours of summer. Very bright light is recommended, with light protection from the most aggressive sun and progressive acclimatization to the outdoors.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It is a species adapted to an irregular rainfall regime in the Karoo, where precipitation can be concentrated in spring and autumn. In cultivation, it is recommended to maintain primary activity during periods of moderate temperatures, providing water abundantly and allowing the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. During the winter, especially at low temperatures, water supply should be greatly reduced and kept practically dry. Excess humidity should also be avoided during episodes of intense heat, as the roots and the base of the stems are sensitive to rot.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescence can reach 12–35 cm and is formed by small groups of one to three flowers. The corolla features a greenish-yellow tube, with reddish tones toward the throat, and small white or slightly pink triangular lobes. Flowering in Spain can be expected mainly between July and September.
🌿 Nutrition
During periods of active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and avoiding fertilization when the plant is dormant, in intense cold, or subjected to extreme temperatures. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
