Adenium obesum "Desert Rose"
€26,50
🌿 Morphology: A caudiciform succulent with a shrub-like habit, featuring a characteristic, greatly thickened caudex or basal trunk that stores water. It produces fleshy branches and leathery, green, glossy leaves of an oval to obovate shape. The roots are thick and adapted for water storage and rapid uptake.
🌍 Origin and habitat: Family Apocynaceae. It is distributed from West African tropics and the Sahel to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, including Yemen, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Socotra. It inhabits dry scrubland, arid savanna, semi-desert, and rocky slopes, typically with seasonal rainfall.
🌡️ Temperature: USDA 10b–12. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 10 °C (50 °F), especially when the substrate may retain moisture. In autumn-winter, with low temperatures, it enters dormancy and may lose its leaves. It does not tolerate frost.
☀️ Light: A species with high light requirements. During active growth, we recommend an approximate DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR, preferably distributed over 10–14 hours. Insufficient lighting promotes weak growth and reduces flowering.
💧 Watering and dormancy: It is primarily winter-dormant. During spring-summer, water abundantly until the entire substrate is moist and allow it to dry completely before the next watering. Reduce watering gradually in autumn. During winter dormancy, especially if it loses its leaves, keep it practically dry and never water when the substrate is cold or damp.
🌸 Flowering: Large, tubular flowers, in shades of pink, red, fuchsia, or white, often with a clear or yellowish throat. In cultivation, it usually flowers mainly from spring to summer, although in warm conditions, flowering can extend for much of the year.
🧪 Nutrition: During active growth, fertilize with Desert CHOICE at a moderate dose and regularly, promoting balanced nutrition that allows for proper root, caudex, and flower development. Suspend fertilization during winter dormancy.
