🌱 Morphology
Small cactus, globose to slightly depressed, with a dark green epidermis. It can form compact clusters with age. It features closely spaced tubercles, small areoles, and a dense spination of fine radial spines, generally pectinate and appressed to the body, white, yellowish, or golden in color. Spination can vary considerably between populations.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Bolivia, in the department of Chuquisaca, especially in the surroundings of Zudáñez, where it grows on rocky slopes at approximately 2,200 to 2,950 m altitude. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. The originally published name was Sulcorebutia crispata subsp. hertusii; Joël Lodé uses Weingartia crispata subsp. hertussi.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −6 ºC when dry and with well-acclimated specimens. The combination of cold and humidity should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and dense spination. Gradual acclimatization is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during the winter. When growth resumes, abundant and spaced watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Rapid drainage and ventilation are essential.
🌸 Flowering
Flowers emerge laterally, near the base of the stem. There is chromatic variation between populations, with red, magenta, yellow, or combinations of these tones, depending on the origin. Field records of VZ 197 and VZ 198, for example, document magenta and red flowers, respectively.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
