🌱 Morphology
Small-sized cactus with very prolific growth, producing numerous lateral shoots and forming dense colonies. The stems are globose, cylindrical, or slightly club-shaped, dark green in color, reaching up to about 9 cm in height and 6–7 cm in diameter. The tubercles are conical to cylindrical, with axils that are either bare or provided with fine bristles. It features 30–60 white, bristly radial spines up to 1 cm long, which are interspersed with 4–12 more robust central spines that are white, yellow, or reddish with a dark apex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Its natural range is very broad: Texas and northeastern Mexico —Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, and Tamaulipas—, as well as Cuba and Hispaniola. It lives from low-lying areas up to about 2,250 m, in dry shrublands, open forests, rock crevices, hillsides, and calcareous soils.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC, provided that the substrate remains dry and exposure to cold is brief.
☀️ Lighting
Strong light and full sun are recommended, especially during active growth. To maintain compact growth and encourage flowering, a DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced, and during winter, it is kept virtually dry while providing good ventilation.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms mainly in spring, from March to May, although in cultivation it may continue to produce flowers for several weeks. The flowers measure approximately 1.4–2 cm and are cream or pale yellow, often with a pink, reddish, or brownish-green central stripe. Numerous bright red, highly decorative cylindrical fruits appear afterward.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissue and maintains turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
