🌱 Morphology
Like a caudex... An extraordinary Mammillaria due to its exceptionally long, cylindrical, and soft tubercles, which can reach several centimeters and resemble small fingers. The body is globose, bright green, and generally solitary at first, though it may form clusters with age. Each tubercle ends in an areole with 9–10 whitish radial spines and 1–3 longer central spines, which are initially light-colored and may darken with age. It can reach about 10 cm in diameter. Its roots form a thickened tuberous system that resembles a caudex, adapted to periods of drought.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a species from central Mexico, present in Guanajuato, Hidalgo, and Querétaro, at approximate altitudes of 1,000–2,400 m. It grows in limestone soils and also on volcanic terrain, among rocks, slopes, escarpments, and plateaus, usually protected by small shrubs and open vegetation. It is not a bare desert cactus: it is part of a semi-arid mountain landscape where rainfall is seasonal and drought can be prolonged. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, subfamily Cactoideae, and tribe Cacteae.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −5 ºC when kept dry and if the specimens are well acclimated. Its mountainous origin allows it to withstand significant drops in temperature, but it must be kept completely dry during the winter.
☀️ Lighting
It loves intense light and direct sun, especially during the growth period. Abundant lighting keeps the tubercles compact and promotes flowering. A DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, with progressive acclimation to the sun.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. Keep completely dry during the cold months. In spring and summer, water deeply and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. In its habitat, it grows on stony and highly draining terrain, so excess moisture is much more dangerous than drought.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms upon reaching maturity at 5–6 years of age. Its flowers are one of the great surprises of this species: pale to deep yellow, funnel-shaped, and exceptionally large for a Mammillaria, reaching about 6 cm in length and diameter. They appear mainly in late spring and early summer, emerging between the tubercles and often covering a good part of the plant. It subsequently produces yellowish fruits.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
