Haworthia truncata 'Loura' | Haworthia Agate Fan
€37,10
🌱 Morphology
A collector's Haworthia, slow-growing and with an unmistakable architecture. Its thick, fleshy leaves are arranged in two opposite rows (distinctive), forming a compact fan. They range from grey-green to dark green and end in abruptly truncated tips, as if they had been cut transversely. These flat surfaces, called leaf windows, are translucent and feature fine lines, dots, and ridges that vary from specimen to specimen. The leaves grow partially buried, and the contractile roots can gradually sink the plant into the substrate, exposing the windows to capture light. 'Loura' is marketed as a horticultural selection of this species; I have not found any reliable technical information that would allow it to be attributed with exclusive characteristics compared to other selections.
🌍 Origin, habitat and family
The species originates from the Little Karoo in the Western Cape, South Africa, in a strip extending from the southwest of Calitzdorp to De Rust, east of Oudtshoorn. It grows in arid, stony soils, often under small shrubs or partially buried. This position protects the leaves from intense sunlight and reduces water loss. Its contractile roots and leaf windows are adaptations to life in a dry environment with irregular rainfall.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures close to -1 °C for short periods and when the substrate is dry. It is advisable to protect it from frost and prolonged damp cold.
☀️ Lighting
It needs abundant filtered light or bright partial shade. Avoid intense sunlight during the middle of the day, especially in summer. A target PAR DLI of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and well-defined leaf windows.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its growth is usually more active during the cooler seasons. In autumn, winter and spring, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out before watering again. During summer, reduce watering as temperatures rise and maintain good ventilation. Avoid waterlogging and persistent moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a slender inflorescence, up to about 20 cm long, with small whitish or pale green tubular flowers marked with brown lines. Flowering is inconspicuous, and its main ornamental appeal lies in the geometric shape of the leaves and their translucent windows.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of bioavailable potassium and calcium. Apply with watering, and reduce or suspend fertilising during summer dormancy.
