🌱 Morphology
Perennial succulent, without an apparent stem, forming compact rosettes 5–7 cm in diameter, which can reach about 10 cm, and producing numerous offsets to form dense colonies. Each rosette has between 20 and 40 thick, turgid, tightly packed leaves. They are ovate-lanceolate, olive green, with blunt, slightly truncated or notched tips. The surface is smooth and translucent, decorated with abundant whitish speckles and between three and seven green longitudinal lines. In cool temperatures, with more light or less water, the leaves can take on reddish and coppery tones. It is distinguished from the typical form of Haworthia turgida by its more rounded and truncated tips and its very pronounced light speckling.
🌍 Origin, habitat and family
It comes from the Western Cape, South Africa, in the region between Swellendam and Riversdale. It inhabits limestone hills and schist soils, where it grows protected from intense sun under thorny bushes or among rocks. Mineral substrate and fast drainage are important to prevent moisture accumulation around the roots.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is advisable to keep it above 0 °C and protect it from frost, especially when the substrate is wet.
☀️ Lighting
Abundant filtered light or bright partial shade. It tolerates slightly more sun than other window Haworthias, but it must be acclimated gradually. A PAR DLI of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and good expression of the speckling.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It grows mainly during the cool seasons. In autumn, winter and spring, water thoroughly and let the substrate dry out before watering again. In summer, reduce watering during heatwaves and maintain good ventilation, without prolonging dehydration excessively.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a slender, erect inflorescence about 15–20 cm long, with small tubular flowers that are brownish-white with darker veins. It flowers mainly in spring.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high potassium content and bioavailable calcium. Apply with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
