🌱 Morphology
Solitary cactus, with a hemispherical to elongated body, slightly sunken apex, and green epidermis. It can reach approximately 6–8 cm in diameter. It has 13–20 narrow ribs, somewhat wider around the areoles, which are covered by a characteristic whitish felt. The spines are moderately strong, initially yellowish to dark and later gray, straight or slightly curved upwards. The root is somewhat thickened, an adaptation that favors water storage.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to the Atacama Region, Chile, especially in the surroundings of the Copiapó valley, Monte Amargo, Paipote, and Sierra Hornillos, from areas near the coast to inland areas. It is mainly found on arid slopes and hills, among rocks and on stony ground. It has been recorded at altitudes of approximately 400 to 2,000 m. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
According to Joël Lodé's classification, the correct name is Guerreroa confinis (F.Ritter) Lodé, published in 2024. Pyrrhocactus confinis, Neochilenia confinis, Neoporteria confinis, and Eriosyce confinis correspond to previously used combinations.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a–11b
It can be grown in climates with mild, dry winters. Once well acclimated, it withstands low temperatures during winter dormancy down to -4ºC, provided the substrate is completely dry. Cold combined with humidity significantly increases the risk of root damage.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, high light availability is recommended, approximately 18–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR, with several hours of direct sun. Good light intensity promotes compact growth, more developed spination, and abundant flowering. In extreme heat conditions, it may benefit from light protection during the central hours of the day.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It is a xerophyte adapted to the extremely arid environments of the Atacama. Growth is concentrated mainly during periods of moderate temperatures. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, with low temperatures, it should be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
It produces narrow, funnel-shaped flowers, approximately 3–3.5 cm long. The inner tepals are white with a reddish midstripe, while the outer ones show more reddish tones and brown tips. The pericarpel and floral tube have small scales and tufts of white wool. When cultivated in Spain, flowering can occur mainly during the spring. The fruit is elongated, reddish-green, and contains black, matte, and smooth seeds.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
