🌱 Morphology
It looks as if someone had painted the branches of a small tree cream and yellow before it started to grow. The green stems are traced by light-colored areas that blend with the species' natural green, while large, fleshy leaves appear clustered at the branch ends. When some leaves fall, pairs of thorns remain on the stems, and the plant regains its characteristic architecture of armed branches.
It is a variegated horticultural form of Euphorbia neriifolia, with a shrubby habit and branched growth. The stems are fleshy, cylindrical or slightly angular, usually with five spirally arranged ribs. On them are tubercles equipped with small shields, from which pairs of short, rigid thorns emerge. The leaves are large, fleshy, and oblanceolate or obovate, clustered towards the ends of the branches and deciduous during dry periods. The variegation produces areas of green tissue combined with cream, yellow, or whitish areas, the pattern of which can vary considerably between specimens. It produces white latex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It has no natural distribution of its own: it is a variegated horticultural form of Euphorbia neriifolia. The parent species comes mainly from the Indian subcontinent and extends through various tropical regions of Asia. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. Variegated forms are maintained through vegetative propagation to preserve their ornamental characteristics.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC only briefly if completely dry and well-acclimated; in cultivation, specific recommendations are much more cautious and place the limit it can withstand while perfectly dry at around 0 ºC. For the variegated form, it is especially advisable to avoid the combination of cold, humidity, and low light.
☀️ Lighting
It needs intense lighting, with an approximate goal of 18–25 mol/m²/day of PAR DLI during growth. Good radiation helps maintain the contrast between the green and variegated areas and prevents excessively weak growth. Direct sun should be introduced progressively if the specimen comes from shade or greenhouse conditions, as variegated tissue can be more sensitive to sudden exposure.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In winter, watering should be greatly reduced and the plant kept practically dry, especially at low temperatures. Rapid drainage is essential to avoid root damage.
🌸 Flowering
The small cyathia appear in axillary clusters, mainly in the terminal areas of the branches. They have yellowish nectar glands and are discreet compared to the appeal of the variegated stems and leaves. As it is the same species, it retains the monoecious floral system of Euphorbia neriifolia.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific succulent fertilizer is recommended, with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied once a month when watering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
