Echinocereus adustus var. radians | Cosihuiriachic Hedgehog Cactus
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Small cactus with short cylindrical stems, generally solitary or forming clusters from the base, approximately 4–12 cm in diameter and up to about 20 cm in height. It features between 13 and 15 low, slightly wavy ribs, divided into small tubercles. The areoles are elliptical, close to each other, and initially covered with white wool. It develops numerous adpressed or pectinate radial spines that are white or cream-colored with darker tips, and usually a robust, straight, reddish-brown central spine. Spination can vary considerably between populations and specimens.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Native to the Mexican state of Chihuahua, especially from the Cosihuiriachi region and surrounding areas. It grows in desert grasslands and stony slopes, on sandy-loam or silty-textured soils, at approximately 1,800 to 2,400 m altitude. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. The name Echinocereus radians corresponds to a historical name now included within Echinocereus adustus subsp. adustus.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 7b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −12 ºC for short periods if kept completely dry and properly acclimated. Its high-altitude origin and marked cold tolerance allow it to be grown in climates with cold winters, always avoiding moisture in the substrate during frosts.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light during active growth and several hours of direct sun. An approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of PAR DLI promotes compact growth and dense, well-developed spination. Good sun exposure is especially important to bring out the characteristic coloration of its spines.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. Its growth is concentrated mainly from spring to early autumn. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In the hottest periods, it can be kept well-hydrated provided drainage is rapid. In winter, it must remain completely dry and cool. It is sensitive to excess moisture and may suffer from root rot if the substrate remains wet for long periods.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large flowers in relation to the stem size, bell-shaped to slightly tubular, and intense pink to magenta in color, with a lighter throat. They appear laterally, below the apex, and can reach approximately 4–6 cm in diameter. In Madrid, flowering occurs mainly between April and June.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
