Crassula ‘Baby Necklace’ f. variegata
€15,90
🌱 Morphology
A compact succulent hybrid developed by Myron Kimnach, the result of a cross between Crassula perforata and Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana. It forms thin stems, initially erect and later arching or trailing, which can reach approximately 20–30 cm.
The leaves are fleshy, small, and rounded to triangular-obovate, colored grayish-green or mint green. They are arranged in opposite and decussate pairs, extremely close to each other, so that the internodes are practically hidden and the stem takes on the appearance of a string of beads. With intense lighting, the leaves develop reddish, pink, or even purple tones on the margins and exposed areas. This clone also displays variegated yellow and cream spots along with the reddish hues.
The compact appearance of the leaves combines characteristics of both parents: the stacked and columnar arrangement of C. rupestris subsp. marnieriana with the leaf architecture of C. perforata.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
There is no natural distribution, as ‘Baby Necklace’ is a horticultural hybrid. It was obtained in cultivation by Myron Kimnach in the United States, and its parentage is documented as Crassula perforata × Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana. Both parent species are South African and belong to the Crassulaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It is a hardy hybrid among cultivated Crassulaceae, but occasional tolerance to temperatures near 0 °C should not be confused with guaranteed frost resistance. It is recommended to keep it dry when temperatures are low and especially to avoid the combination of cold, humidity, and poor ventilation.
☀️ Lighting
It requires high light levels to maintain short internodes, the compact arrangement of the leaves, and the characteristic reddish tones. Target DLI PAR: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
It tolerates direct sun if acclimated progressively. In conditions of very intense radiation and high temperatures, it may appreciate some protection during the central hours of the day, especially when in small containers.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
As it is a hybrid, there is no natural climatic cycle that allows for a strict summer or winter dormancy. Its behavior in cultivation is influenced by its two parents, which originate from arid regions of South Africa.
During active growth phases, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. With high temperatures, growth may slow down, and it is advisable to space out waterings. In winter, if temperatures are low and growth stops, water intake should be significantly reduced and the substrate kept dry for extended periods.
🌸 Flowering
It can produce small white flowers, grouped in terminal inflorescences. Flowering generally appears when the specimen reaches sufficient maturity and receives adequate lighting. In cultivation, this can occur toward the end of spring or the beginning of summer, although the timing may vary considerably depending on temperature, lighting, and cultivation regimen.
🌿 Nutrition
During periods of active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and with the substrate previously moistened. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technical square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
