🌱 Morphology
Tylecodon buchholzianus. A small, highly branched shrubby succulent, up to about 30 cm tall, with a thickened, irregular base and ascending or spreading greenish-gray branches. The stems are relatively fragile, with smooth bark on young branches that can peel off in small brown flakes with age. The leaves are deciduous and short-lived, small, fleshy, linear to obovate, approximately 0.5–4 cm, generally cylindrical or slightly grooved on the upper side. In some plants, the leaves are very sparse and can even be reduced to small rudiments while the stems continue to perform photosynthesis.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Family Crassulaceae. It is distributed from southern Namibia to the Northern Cape of South Africa, especially around the lower Orange River region. It grows in arid environments of the Desert and Succulent Karoo, usually in rock crevices and stony slopes, often in protected and cool exposures.
❄️ Temperature / USDA Zone: 9b–11b
It is a species adapted to arid environments with cold nights during its active period. It can withstand drops in temperature when the substrate is completely dry, but it is recommended to avoid the combination of low temperatures and persistent humidity. The USDA zone is a climatic reference and does not represent an absolute minimum survival temperature.
☀️ Lighting
High lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. Good light intensity promotes compact stems and maintains its photosynthetic capacity during phases when it develops few leaves. It is advisable to gradually acclimatize specimens to direct sun.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
It is a winter-growing Tylecodon, with short-lived leaves that appear during the favorable season and are lost before or during flowering. It blooms in summer when it is dormant and has lost all its leaves. During the active period, it is recommended to perform abundant watering and let the substrate dry completely before repeating. Upon entering dormancy and losing its leaves, watering should be reduced progressively until it is kept practically dry during the warm period.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescences are small and almost sessile, forming erect thyrses with few flowers. The flowers are tubular, approximately 10–15 mm, purple to reddish-purple in color, with lobes that are extended and later recurved. In southern Africa, flowering is recorded mainly between January and March; in Spain, it may shift depending on temperature and photoperiod.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, with moderate fertilization. It is not recommended to fertilize during the summer dormancy. Before flowering, Desert CHOICE® Flowering can be used.
